Character Spotlight: Arthur

Ready for a new spotlight?

Arthur is the 1st of my main character spotlight.

The middle child of 3. He was just a child when his mother died, just barely 2 years old. He lived most of his life in the City of Rau, in the southeast region of the kingdom. When duty called and his father left to join the Dragon Guard, both he and his sisters were left in the care of their grandfather. They have not seen their father in over 10 years.

Before he left, his father made him promise to take care of his little sister, Amalya.

“He would let nothing happen to her. He made a promise and promises were not meant to be broken.”

He took this promise to heart and throughout his life, was always there to protect and watch over her. Growing up, Arthur was a boy with big dreams. He wanted to be someone, and so took it upon himself to train to become a City Guard. He trained diligently and soon became the most skilled trainee amongst his fellow squires.

Then the letter arrived and changed everything.

Arthur never was one to seek a life of adventure. He was happy in the city he was raised in. He was excited about his upcoming position and knew it would lead to greater opportunities. Unfortunately, life does not always work out the way we want it to.

“Sometimes it was necessary to take a risk to receive the reward you are hoping for…a risk without a second thought.”

Arthur is 19 years old. He is an average youth with short dark hair and hazel eyes. He is strong and trains with a 2-handed great sword. He is the best fighter amongst the city guard trainees and was appointed squire to the Guard Commander before his adventure began.

Loyalty is his best strength & greatest weakness.

Arthur is a loyal brother & friend. He is caring and a good-natured person. He always hopes for the best in any given situation. He is a good fighter and does not lack common sense. He is constantly at war with himself. What is best for others and what is best for himself? Others always take precedence.

“I would have DIED before betraying you and accepted my death gladly knowing I had done so and remained true to myself.”

Let me know what you think of Arthur!

He is the type of person we need more of in this world. He is the one character I root for throughout the entire series. Thanks for reading!

  1. Arthur reminds me a lot of my other MC (Cao – who will not to be seen in my current WIP). Lately there seems to be a trend of MC’s who are too relatable, either too goofy and weak or too flawed and takes years of development before they become a truly good person. There is nothing wrong with this but I see it all the time. Can we not have a character who is just good from the start? Who by default is an amazing, tough, awesome person that everyone looks up to? Is that so unrealistic these days? I feel Arthur is that person – one that everyone will flock to. Once he gathers a following, the story is not just about him (the perfect leader) but about his colleagues (the flawed, relatable individuals) so you have the best of both worlds. I try to do the same in my universe with Cao, but again it’ll be awhile before he makes an appearance.

I look forward to learning more about Arthur and the world he exists in. 🙂
